Two job titles keep showing up in the same meetings: RevOps and GTM engineer. Both touch the CRM, both use automation, and both care about pipeline. So people ask which one they need, or assume they are the same thing with different names.
They overlap, but each owns a different part of the revenue system. Here is how we split it.
GTM engineering builds the plays that find and reach buyers. Think enrichment, buying signals, list building, outbound sequences and the tools behind them, such as Clay, Apollo, Smartlead and HeyReach.
Revenue Operations owns the system those plays run on: the CRM data model, lifecycle stages, deal stages, routing, attribution and reporting. RevOps decides what a qualified lead is, where it goes, and how you will know if a play worked.
| Area | GTM engineering | Revenue Operations |
|---|---|---|
| Target accounts | Builds and enriches the lists | Defines the ICP fields and keeps them clean in the CRM |
| Signals and scoring | Finds signals and tests which ones predict a reply | Turns the winning signals into a lead or account score reps can see |
| Outbound | Writes and runs sequences | Logs every touch to the contact and stops double outreach |
| Replies and meetings | Hands over interested replies | Routes them to the right rep with an SLA |
| Pipeline | Creates it | Sets the stages, exit rules and forecast |
| Reporting | Tracks reply and meeting rates per play | Tracks pipeline, win rate and payback per channel |
Most problems sit in the handoff. A few we see often:
Each of these comes from the same gap: nobody decided who owns the rule. Changing tools won't fix that.
We are a Revenue Operations team that also builds the GTM systems layer. That means Clay, Apollo, Smartlead, HeyReach and n8n connected to HubSpot, with the routing, scoring and reporting around them. Many clients already have a GTM agency or an in-house growth team running campaigns. We build the system underneath so their work shows up as tracked pipeline.
If your outbound is running but the CRM can't tell you what it produced, book a free CRM audit. For teams in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, see Revenue Operations in MENA, and for definitions, the RevOps glossary.
GTM engineering builds and runs the plays that find and reach buyers: enrichment, signals, list building and outbound sequences, usually with tools like Clay, Apollo and Smartlead. Revenue Operations owns the system underneath: the CRM data model, lifecycle and deal stages, routing, attribution and reporting. GTM engineering creates pipeline; RevOps makes sure it is tracked, routed and measured correctly.
Often one person covers both at first. The work is still different, so write down who owns the CRM rules and who owns the outbound plays, even if it is the same person on different days.
We build the GTM systems layer: Clay, Apollo, Smartlead, HeyReach and n8n connected to HubSpot, with routing, scoring and reporting. We often work next to a client's GTM agency or growth team, who keep running the campaigns.
